Frequently Asked Questions
Soy wax is often recommended for beginners because it’s easy to work with, clean-burning, and has a good scent throw. It’s also biodegradable and derived from natural soybeans.
If you prefer stronger scents and vibrant colours, Paraffin Wax is another good option – It’s forgiving and gives professional-looking results.

Container wax is soft and made for candles that stay inside jars or tins. It sticks well to glass and melts at lower temperatures – perfect for container candles
Pillar wax is harder and made for freestanding candles (like pillar or mould candles). It needs to hold its own shape, so it has a harder melting point and special additives to release cleanly from moulds. Pillar wax can also be used for wax melts.
Tip: Always use the right wax for your project – Container wax can collapse in moulds, and pillar wax may shrink or crack in jars.
The amount of fragrance oil depends on your wax’s fragrance load capacity and usually 6-12% by weight.
An example, if using 1kg of wax with a 10% fragrance load, you would use 100g of fragrance oil.
These are common cosmetic issues:
- Sinkholes: Caused by uneven cooling or air pockets. Prevent them by pouring slowly and using a heat gun to smooth the top
- Frosting: Common in soy wax; it’s a natural crystal formation and doesn’t affect performance. You can minimize it by controlling the cooling temperature.

Curing allows the wax and fragrance oil to bond for the best scent throw. We recommend:
- Soy candles: Cure for 7-14 days
- Coconut blends: Around 5-7 days
- Paraffin candles: Can be ready in 1-2 days
Store them in a cool, dark place during this period
To boost scent throw:
- Use high-quality fragrance oils
- Ensure you’re adding fragrance oil at the correct temperature
- Use maximum fragrance load the wax will allow (10% – 12%)
- Let the candle cure properly before burning
- Try different waxes, paraffin waxes and parasoy blends are known for the best scent throw compared to vegetable based waxes.
