Making Sustainable Halloween Choices

Halloween is just around the corner and so is a lot of waste. From low-cost decorations to fast-fashion costumes right up to the carved pumpkin you leave outside your door, we see a whole host of waste and throw away items from the Halloween season. This blog will give you tips and ideas for being more sustainable while you get your spook on!

For general crafting sustainability choices that you can carry out day to day, you can read our blog; Making Sustainable Choices as a Crafter here.

Pumpkins

Did you know that the UK is expected to throw out 8 million pumpkins at Halloween? The most obvious way to ensure that your pumpkin does not go to waste is simply to eat it. As long as your pumpkin is still in good condition, you can use it to make anything from soup to bread. Alternatively, you can put the leftover pumpkin to good use in the garden by composting it, removing the seeds beforehand if you fancy planting them and growing your own.

Any pumpkins leftover from Halloween can also be fantastic for helping wildlife. They’re great for making your own bird feed. Mammals are also a fan of pumpkin so you could even cut up the remaining pumpkin flesh and leave it out – in a wooded area or a park if you don’t want them in your garden – for squirrels, deer, foxes, hedgehogs and badgers to enjoy.

Sustainable Decorations

If you love making home fragrance products, why not try your hand at some home decor crafts? Making your own Halloween decorations be it by yourself or maybe with your kids, you can avoid high street prices and plastics by making your own from things you can find around your home! Get creative with what you can find, who knows what you’ll come up with.

Give Life to Old Decorations

Thinking of throwing your old decorations away? Think again. You’ll find that you can often fix up old decorations if you give them a little TLC. Whether it’s a lick of paint, a sewing stitch here and there or just a good clean, you can probably get more use out of your existing decorations than you think.

Ditch Plastics

As we all well and truly know, plastic isn’t the best. Looking to ditch plastics and find suitable replacements and alternatives is a great way to be more sustainable. From opting for sweets wrapped in paper or foil to having decorations made from card and tissue, there are lots of ways you can avoid plastic this season.

Caring for Costumes

Be it with friends, family or someone you work with, you can swap your old Halloween costume with someone else. This way you have something different to wear without buying new! Alternatively shopping at charity shops or on websites such as depop or vinted allows you to give costumes a new lease of life, when it comes to fashion, you can make sustainable choices instead of buying new! If you’re feeling extra savvy, you could always make your own costume with clothing and accessories you already have, websites like Pinterest are great for giving you inspiration for DIY costumes as well as decorations.

Recycling our Products

Did you know that you can recycle our products too! Our glass fragrance oil bottles are perfect for getting creative with. Add a pump spray lid and you have your own perfume or room spray bottle, or add reeds and reuse our bottle as a reed diffuser! Add one of our Halloween inspired fragrances for a super spooky sustainable product.

Our packaging can also be upcycled, from our cardboard boxes to our packing paper, you can use what we send your items in to create your own Halloween decorations or crafts instead of buying them from the shop!
