Upcoming fragrance regulations are bringing changes to a small number of fragrance ingredients over the next two years. Here’s what you need to know, how Supplies For Candles is preparing, and what (if anything) you need to do.

The fragrance industry is continually evolving to meet the latest safety standards and regulations.

Over the next two years, a small number of fragrance ingredients are expected to receive updated regulatory classifications under European legislation. As a result, some ingredients will become restricted or no longer permitted in certain applications, particularly within cosmetic products.

At Supplies For Candles, we’re already working closely with our fragrance manufacturing partners to ensure any affected fragrances remain compliant while maintaining the quality and performance you expect.

The good news?

The vast majority of our fragrance oils will not be affected.

Why Are These Changes Happening?

Regulations surrounding fragrance ingredients are regularly reviewed as new scientific research and safety information becomes available.

Manufacturers continually assess ingredients to ensure fragrance oils continue to meet current legislation and maintain high standards of consumer safety.

As regulations change, some fragrance oils may require reformulation to remain compliant. This is a normal part of the fragrance industry’s ongoing commitment to product safety.

Which Ingredients Are Being Reviewed?

The ingredients currently expected to be affected include:

• Heliotropine
• Diphenyl Oxide
• Tea Tree Oil
• Acetophenone
• p-Cymene
• Bourgeonal
• Cuminic Aldehyde
• Cyclamen Aldehyde
• Cyclemax

It’s important to note that this does not mean every fragrance containing these ingredients will disappear. In many cases, fragrances will simply be reformulated to comply with the updated regulations.

What Is the Timeline?

One ingredient in particular, Diphenyl Oxide, has a defined transition period.

June 2026

New fragrance formulations can no longer contain Diphenyl Oxide.

September 2027

Fragrances manufactured and placed on the market before June 2026 may continue to be sold and used until September 2027.

This 18-month transition period gives both manufacturers and makers plenty of time to move over to updated formulations without unnecessary disruption.

Which Fragrances Are Currently Affected?

At present, the only Supplies For Candles fragrances confirmed to require reformulation due to the removal of Diphenyl Oxide are:

• Rose Fragrance Oil, Allergen Free (FRAG0417)
• Gingersnap Eggnog (FRAG0491)

We’ll continue to communicate any additional changes should further fragrances become affected.

Will My Fragrance Smell Different?

This is probably the question we’re asked most.

In most cases, any differences will be minimal.

Our fragrance partners carefully develop and test reformulated fragrances to preserve the original scent profile and performance as closely as possible.

Our goal is for your finished candles, wax melts and home fragrance products to remain as consistent as possible.

Will Performance Change?

Reformulated fragrances are designed to continue performing to a high standard in:

• Candles
• Wax melts
• Reed diffusers
• Room sprays
• Other home fragrance products

However, just as you would with any new batch of fragrance oil, we always recommend carrying out your usual product testing before moving into larger-scale production.

Do I Need to Update My CLP Labels?

Possibly.

If a fragrance has been reformulated, there may be changes to:

• CLP classifications
• Allergen declarations
• Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

Whenever updated documentation becomes available, we’ll publish the latest versions on the relevant product pages so you can update your labels where required.

Do I Need to Do Anything Right Now?

For most customers:

No.

At this stage, this is simply an advance notice so you can plan ahead.

If you currently use one of the affected fragrances, we’ll keep you informed as reformulated versions become available and provide all the updated documentation you’ll need.
