How To Make Cold Process Soap

Throughout this guide, we are going to explain the entire cold soap-making process from start to finish. By the end, you will have learned everything you need to know about creating your own unique and beautifully handcrafted soaps, completely from scratch.

Once you have your equipment ready, be sure to wear protective gloves and goggles throughout the entire process as you will be handling harmful chemicals which can lead to serious injury.

1. Make the Lye

Start by measuring out 105g of cold clean water using a measuring jug. Then carefully add 45g of sodium hydroxide and mix thoroughly using a whisk. It is important that you do not breathe in the vapour at this point. This is youe lye, and it will heat up to 95 degrees celcius.

2. Melt the Oils

Next, using the scales, weigh out 140g of olive oil, 100g of palm oil, and 80g of coconut oil. Place into a saucepan on a low heat until it has melted.

3. Combine the Lye and Oils

Once the melted oils and your lye are at the same temperature, between 50-60 degrees celcius, you can pour the lye mixture into the saucepan of melted oils. Using a whisk start mixing immediately to ensure the mixture all starts to react and combine. You will soon notice that your mixture begins to thicken and become opaque. If you plan on adding a fragrance oil or essential oil, now is the time to do so. We recommend you add around 2% of the overall weight. Here is also when you will add your colour if you wish to do so. Make sure it is thoroughly mixed.

Combine Lye and Oils

 

4. Pour into the Mould

Once your mixture is completely combined it is time to pour it into your chosen mould. You should now leave your soap to cure. Setting should take no more than 24 hours.

5. Demould

You can now gently remove your soap from the mould. If the soap feels too sticky or soft, leave it to set for a further 24-48 hours. You can use a soap cutter to cut your soap into your desired shape and size.
