Benefits of Citronella Essential Oil

Before we dive into the candle-making process, let’s take a moment to appreciate the benefits of citronella essential oil. This essential oil, extracted from the leaves and stems of different species of lemongrass, is renowned for its ability to repel insects. Here are some key benefits:

Natural Insect Repellent: Citronella oil is widely used for its natural insect-repelling properties. It masks the scents that attract insects, effectively keeping them away.

Pleasant Aroma: Unlike chemical repellents, citronella has a refreshing, lemony scent that is pleasant to humans but repels insects.

Safe and Non-Toxic: When used properly, citronella essential oil is safe for humans and pets, making it a great alternative to synthetic chemical repellents.

Versatility: Beyond candles, citronella oil can be used in sprays, lotions, and diffusers.

How To Make Your Own Citronella Candles…

  1. Firstly, prepare your area by gathering all the necessary equipment needed.
  2. Wearing gloves, add your wax to a saucepan and melt on a low heat until your wax reaches roughly 80°C.
  3. While the wax is melting, prepare your cube candle glasses by placing the Eco16 wicks in the centre of each glass. You can use a wick holder or a pencil laid across the top of the glass to keep the wick centred and upright.
  4. Then, remove the wax from the heat and let cool to 70°C, then pour in your essential oil and stir well.
  5. Let your wax cool to around 60°C, you can now carefully pour your melted wax into your container and leave to set. We recommend leaving them for at least 24hrs for the best results.
  6. Once set, trim your wick and if needed heat gun the top for a smooth finish.
  7. Then you can enjoy your Citronella Candles!

Top tip: Warm your candle jar before adding your wax, this helps reduce shrinkage. Either warm with a heat gun or soak in hot water, just be careful not to get water in the glass.

Enjoy Your Handmade Citronella Candles!

Now your citronella candles are ready to use! Place them around your outdoor space to create a bug-free zone with a pleasant aroma. Not only will these candles enhance your outdoor gatherings, but they also offer a natural and eco-friendly alternative to chemical insect repellents.

Should you burn a candle to the bottom?

Candles should never be burnt to the bottom, as this is unsafe. The candle glass or jar becomes extremely hot, which is initially absorbed by the wax but the lower the wax level the hotter the jar becomes. As it becomes too hot, it will cause it to break or shatter which increases the risk of a fire or injury. Do not burn when there is less than 1-2cm of wax remaining in your candle.

Making your own citronella candles is a rewarding DIY project that combines functionality with creativity. With just a few simple ingredients, you can enjoy the benefits of citronella essential oil while adding a personal touch to your outdoor decor. Happy crafting, and may your summer nights be peaceful and bug-free!
