At Supplies for Candles, we’re fortunate to work with makers from all walks of life. Some journeys begin with a business plan. Others begin with a simple idea at the kitchen table.
For Mrs Magical UK, the journey started with a mother and daughter, a few cupcake cases, and a love of home fragrance.
From Homemade Wax Melts to a Growing Community
Back in March 2015, founder Karen and her daughter Lauren decided to make some wax melts for themselves. What began as a way to save money on home fragrance quickly became something much bigger.
The pair created their first products using cupcake cases and, encouraged by the results, attended a local car boot sale the following week. They sold an impressive 80 bags of wax melts, which they named Magical Melts.
Soon after, they launched a Facebook page to showcase their creations.
“We never intended it to be anything more than a hobby,” Karen explains. “We just loved home fragrancing.”
Their creativity and enthusiasm quickly attracted attention. Within two years, the business had built a community of more than 5,000 followers, recruited 25 representatives across the UK, and grown to a point where former customers were helping manage the business and its expanding network.
When Life Took an Unexpected Turn
As the business flourished, Karen’s personal life became increasingly challenging.
Having already left a career in healthcare after suffering serious back injuries, she faced further upheaval when her marriage of 27 years ended. The separation meant leaving both her family home and the workshop where the business operated.
The result was heartbreaking.
The company, then known as Magical Melts UK Ltd, had to close its doors.
“I was left with nothing,” Karen recalls. “I was heartbroken.”
Despite the setback, Karen rebuilt her life. She found work back in healthcare, moved into a new home and continued moving forward. Meanwhile, Lauren pursued her own path, training as a Cardiac Intensive Care Nurse before later relocating to Dubai.
More Challenges to Overcome
Life had more obstacles in store.
While working in community healthcare, Karen suffered a serious shoulder injury. The damage eventually led to osteoarthritis and forced her to stop working altogether. Shortly after returning to her former marital home, she also experienced hearing and balance problems.
The combination of physical health challenges and life changes left Karen feeling lost.
“I was very depressed and needed to do something.”
For many people, that might have been the end of the story.
For Karen, it became the start of a new chapter.
The Return of Mrs Magical
Determined to create something positive again, Karen decided to relaunch her business — this time under a new name.
Customers had affectionately nicknamed her Mrs Magical, and the name felt like the perfect fit for a fresh start.
Today, Mrs Magical UK creates a range of home fragrance products including:
- Scented Sprinkles (Sizzlers)
- Room Sprays
- Car Fresheners
- Reed Diffusers
Karen now operates the business in a way that works around her health and mobility challenges, carefully managing production volumes while continuing to serve the loyal customer base she built over the years.
What makes the story even more remarkable is the community that remained alongside her throughout the journey. Despite the business closure and relaunch, Karen retained much of her online following, with thousands of customers continuing to support her work.
“I never had the heart to close the pages because they were something I was very proud of.”
Working with Supplies for Candles
As part of her new chapter, Karen uses fragrance oils from Supplies for Candles in many of her products.
She describes the fragrances as some of the strongest and longest-lasting she has worked with and says they have become an important part of her business today.
Her feedback has also highlighted some of the day-to-day challenges faced by independent makers, particularly around fragrance oil labelling and CLP management, offering valuable insight into how suppliers can better support small businesses and makers with additional accessibility needs.
Looking Ahead
Mrs Magical UK’s story is about far more than fragrance products.
It’s a story of resilience, determination and refusing to give up after life throws its toughest challenges your way.
From a simple wax melt made in a cupcake case, to building a thriving community, losing everything, and finding the strength to start again, Karen’s journey is a powerful reminder that sometimes the most magical things happen when we refuse to stop believing in ourselves.
