How To Make An Insect Repellent Room Spray Using Citronella

Learn how to make an Insect Repellent using Citronella Essential Oil, a recipe perfect for keeping those pesky bugs away during the Summer.

With amazing properties, Citronella Essential Oil acts as a key component in this recipe, not only does it hold a crisp, lemon and grassy aroma, it also keeps insects at bay. Making it ideal for our room spray and it also works well in candles and wax melts as well.

How does Citronella Essential Oil work as a repellent?

Citronella Essential Oil, is created from the lemongrass plant. With a powerful citrus aroma, this oil acts as a perfect repellent for mosquitos, flies and other insects. It works by masking the scents of things most desirable to insects, making it hard for them to find food. Citronella oil protects and deters your living space from unwanted bugs, as well as having a range of benefits for your health and your skin. Enjoy time in your garden, without being pestered by insects and releasing a fresh scent into your home.

What is a good base for making Room Sprays?

For this recipe we have used Cyclopentasiloxane, a substance that uses silicone as its base. A wonderful ingredient for your home fragrance recipes, this silicone-based oil is an amazing carrier for fragrance and essential oils. Ensuring every spray holds an even amount of oil and works the same for every use.

What is the best way to use a Room Spray?

A room spray releases the perfect amount of scent to your living space in just a few short spritz. A lighter home fragrance choice, especially on a warmer day, a room spray works similarly in a space to a candle or wax melt without out the need for a flame or heat. Just like an air freshener, room sprays are liquid based, often including a component such as Cyclopentasiloxane to hold the aroma and instantly freshen up any room.

Due to their formulation room sprays tend to be oil based, meaning they can be slippery when in contact with hard surfaces, so always take this into consideration when using your spray. Depending on the fragrance or essential oil you use, some have a colour tint which if directed at soft furnishings it can cause staining. We would always recommend spraying in an open space, into the air, in a swiping motion. If you are looking for a home fragrance option for your sofas and bedding, we would recommend a linen or fabric spray.

What home fragrance products are the best insect repellents?

As well as Room Sprays, you can also use citronella in wax melts and candles. If you’re having a nice chilled evening in the garden, light a candle to keep away any unwanted visitors or light your burner and pop in a citronella wax melt. This along with your room sprays means you will be covered all summer long!

Did you know you can also use citronella in a range of cosmetic and toiletry formulations, including lip and body balms. To give you that extra layer of protection and to stop bugs thinking you’re a tasty snack.
